Can ChatGPT write a movie script? Yes. Ask it for a screenplay and it will produce scenes, dialogue and sluglines in roughly the right format. Whether it’s a good script is another question. ChatGPT is strong at ideas, outlines and fast rewrites, and weak at the things that make scripts memorable: a distinct voice, subtext, surprising choices and structure that holds up over a whole feature.

Short answer: use ChatGPT as a writing partner, not the writer. Let it brainstorm, outline and draft options, then rewrite in your own voice. Scripts that go to the Oscars must be human-authored, and purely AI-generated text can’t be copyrighted in the U.S.

Can ChatGPT Write a Movie Script? The Short Answer

Writers and journalists have been testing this since ChatGPT launched. A typical result: competent structure, generic characters and dialogue that says exactly what it means. Some well-known filmmakers have been more impressed; in January 2025 Paul Schrader said ChatGPT could produce “original” and “fleshed out” script ideas. Both views can be true: it can generate good raw material quickly, and it still needs a writer to shape it.

What ChatGPT Does Well

  • Brainstorming: loglines, premises, titles and “what if” twists in seconds.

  • Outlining: turning a premise into a three-act or beat-sheet outline.

  • Formatting help: sluglines, action lines and dialogue blocks in a screenplay-like layout.

  • Rewrites on request: shorter, funnier, more tense, or from another character’s point of view.

  • Research and feedback: period details to verify, plot-hole checks and notes on pacing.

Where ChatGPT Falls Short

  • Voice: characters tend to sound alike, and alike to every other ChatGPT script.

  • Subtext: people say what they feel, which kills drama.

  • Predictability: it leans toward the most likely next idea, which means clichés.

  • Long-form continuity: over a feature length, setups, payoffs and character details can drift.

  • Accuracy: it can invent facts, so check anything real.

What Happened When a Filmmaker Let ChatGPT Write a Feature

The best-known test is The Last Screenwriter, a 2024 Swiss feature directed by Peter Luisi. He prompted ChatGPT for a plot, then characters, an outline and finally individual scenes, and limited his own changes to shortening repetitive dialogue and cutting some scenes. The script was written in about five days in December 2023, and the film was shot in January 2024.

The result shows both sides of the answer. ChatGPT produced a complete, shootable feature script. But a London cinema cancelled its planned premiere after complaints from the public, and Luisi then released the film for free online (Screen Daily). Technically possible and accepted by audiences are two different things.

How to Write a Movie Script with AI

An AI draft is a starting point; the rewrite is where the script becomes yours.

The six steps, and who does the work at each one.
  1. Start with your idea. Bring a premise, a character and an ending you care about. AI works best with a strong point of view to react to.

  2. Generate options, not answers. Ask for ten loglines or five versions of the midpoint, and pick or combine.

  3. Outline before scenes. Lock the beats first; it’s much easier to fix structure in an outline than in pages.

  4. Draft scene by scene. Give the AI the scene’s purpose, who wants what and the subtext, then rewrite the draft yourself.

  5. Do a voice pass. Read dialogue aloud and make each character sound like themselves.

  6. Get human feedback. A table read with friends will tell you more than any model.

Logline options prompt template
Here is my premise: [premise]. Main character: [who they are, what they want]. Ending: [how it ends].
Give me 10 loglines for this film, each one sentence, each with a different angle or genre twist.
Don't change the ending. I'll pick or combine.
Scene draft prompt template
Write a 2-page screenplay scene.
Characters: [NAME, what they want] and [NAME, what they want].
Setting: [place, time of day].
Purpose of the scene: [what changes by the end].
Subtext: [what neither character says out loud].
Tone: [e.g. tense, dry humor].
Use standard screenplay format. Avoid characters stating their feelings directly.

Prompts That Get Better Script Drafts

So, can ChatGPT write a movie script you’d want to keep? The answer depends a lot on how you ask. Vague prompts get generic scenes. Specific prompts, given one step at a time, get material you can actually rewrite. These are starting points, not magic words:

  • Logline options. “Give me ten loglines for a 5-minute drama about [situation]. Each must name the protagonist, their goal and what stands in the way.”
  • Beat outline. “Turn logline #3 into a beat outline for a 5-minute short: opening image, inciting incident, midpoint turn, climax and final image. One sentence per beat.”
  • Scene list. “Break the outline into 6 to 8 scenes. For each, give the location, time of day, who is in it and what changes by the end.”
  • Single-scene draft. “Write scene 4 in screenplay format. Keep it under two pages. Characters should never say what they feel directly.”
  • Critique pass. “Act as a script reader. List the five biggest weaknesses in this scene and why, without rewriting it.”

Two habits make the biggest difference. First, keep each request small, one scene or one task at a time, because long requests are where drift and repetition creep in. Second, rewrite every line of dialogue yourself, out loud. That’s where your voice comes in, and it’s also the part that matters most for credit and copyright, since human authorship is what the rules protect.

ChatGPT vs a Screenplay Tool

ChatGPT is a general chat assistant, so you manage the format, the files and what happens next yourself. A dedicated screenplay tool trades flexibility for a guided workflow. CinemaDrop’s Script Wizard, for example, goes from an idea to five concepts, then a beat outline with a target length of 1 to 10 minutes, then a full script in an editor with scene heading, character and dialogue formats. It can then pull your characters, locations and props out as reusable Elements and move into a storyboard, so the script becomes shots. Script writing is on every plan, including the free Lite plan. The concept, outline and script steps cost 45 credits in total, which fits within Lite’s 50 one-time credits. Adding the Elements step (55 credits) brings a full wizard run to 100 credits, which needs a paid plan.

What Is an AI Script?

An AI script is a screenplay drafted partly or fully by an AI language model from a prompt. In practice most “AI scripts” are hybrids: the AI drafts, a person selects and rewrites. The more of the final text is yours, the more of it you can protect and the better it usually reads.

How to Tell If a Script Is AI-Written

There’s no reliable test. AI-text detectors give false positives and miss edited text, so don’t accuse anyone on a detector score alone. Common tells in unedited AI scripts include on-the-nose dialogue, characters who all sound the same, tidy speeches about feelings, generic names and settings, and action lines full of adjectives rather than specific images. A good human rewrite removes most of these.

Rights and Industry Rules

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 report found that purely AI-generated material isn’t copyrightable and that prompts alone usually aren’t enough, while human-written and human-modified parts can be protected. For the 99th Oscars, the Academy requires screenplays to be human-authored, as the Los Angeles Times reported. And the 2026 WGA agreement keeps the 2023 protections on how studios can use AI with writers’ work. Our AI copyright guide covers ownership in more detail.

FAQ

Can I use AI to write a movie script?

Yes, as a brainstorming and drafting aid. Rewrite the result in your own voice, both for quality and so the script is protectable.

Can ChatGPT write a full-length screenplay?

It can produce one in pieces, but expect continuity problems over 90–120 pages. Outline first and draft scene by scene.

Is it legal to use ChatGPT for a script?

Yes, generally. Check the tool’s terms, avoid copying existing scripts or characters, and know that purely AI-written text can’t be copyrighted in the U.S.

How long is a script for a 2-hour movie?

Usually around 120 pages. The industry rule of thumb is one page of properly formatted screenplay per minute of screen time, so most features run about 90 to 120 pages.

What font are movie scripts written in?

12-point Courier (or a Courier-style font such as Courier Prime). The fixed-width font is what keeps the one-page-per-minute rule roughly true, and screenplay tools apply it for you.

Will studios accept an AI-written script?

Rules vary by company and union contract, and the Oscars require human-authored screenplays. A script that reads as generic AI text also tends to get passed on quickly.

What’s the best AI for writing a script?

It depends on the job: a general chat model for brainstorming and rewrites, or a screenplay tool if you want formatting and a path to storyboards.

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT can write a movie script, but it can’t write your movie script. Use it to move faster through ideas, outlines and rough drafts, then make every scene sound like you.
