AI in Film
A 3x3 grid of nine film stills in different genres, from sci-fi and noir to anime and 3D animation, with "AI Film Festivals" in glowing marquee lights across the middle row

On October 3, an AI film festival in Kazakhstan gave one filmmaker $450,000. The first Astana AI Film Festival received 8,067 films from 125 countries, and its Grand Prix went to Nikolay Shestak’s The First Honest Day, according to Qazinform. AI film festivals are now a real circuit, with juries, entry fees, runtime rules and deadlines, and the rules differ more than you’d think.

This guide lists the AI film festivals you can still enter, the 2026 editions that already happened, what their rules require and what the winners did differently. It ends with a short, festival-focused workflow for making a film that qualifies. Every date, fee and prize below was checked on the festival’s own site on October 6, 2026, unless another source is named.

Quick answer: five AI film festivals still open for entries (as of Oct 6, 2026)

  • Florence AI Festival (Italy): final deadline Nov 4, 2026, as reported by AI Film Contests; festival on Nov 22.
  • AI FilmFest (Málaga, Spain): free entry until Dec 1, 2026.
  • Artefact AI Film Festival (Paris): until Dec 2, 2026; films up to 314 seconds.
  • World AI Film Festival (WAIFF) 2027 (Cannes finale): until Feb 15, 2027; fees rise after Nov 15.
  • HKAIIFF 2027 (Hong Kong): until Mar 1, 2027; US$99 per film.

Key takeaways

  • Runtime rules split the field. Most AI film festivals want 3–15 minutes, but Artefact caps films at 314 seconds and WAIFF’s short film competition starts at 5 minutes. A cut between 5:00 and 5:14 fits every runtime rule in this guide.
  • Almost every festival asks you to disclose your AI tools and workflow, from a 100–300-word statement (Florence) to a production journal (WAIFF).
  • Platform contests such as Higgsfield’s require you to generate on their platform. Independent festivals judge the film, whatever tools you used.
  • Winners’ stories point the same way: a long time on the script, something personal, and a lot of retakes for performance.

AI film festival calendar 2026–27: deadlines you can still make

These are five AI film festivals with open calls that we checked as of October 6, 2026, listed soonest deadline first. It isn’t a complete list: smaller AI film contests open and close every week. “Fee” is the entry fee per film where the festival publishes it.

Timeline of AI film festival deadlines from October 2026 to May 2027, with festival dates in Florence, Paris, Málaga and Cannes
Open and upcoming AI film festival calls as of Oct 6, 2026: submission windows and festival dates, checked on each festival’s site (Florence’s deadline as reported by AI Film Contests).

Last checked: October 6, 2026. Festival pages change often, so confirm the date on the festival’s own site before you pay an entry fee.

Not open yet: AI for Good’s 2027 call runs January 15 to May 1, 2027 (details below). Worth watching: the 2nd AI Film Festival Japan runs Oct 31–Nov 2, 2026 at Tokyo Innovation Base (venue still marked “to be confirmed”). Its categories include narrative, experimental, animation and a new AI film music score category.

The 2026 festivals that already happened

If you missed these, they’re still worth studying, because their winners and rules show where the circuit is going. As of October 6, only AI for Good had posted its 2027 call (details below).

Astana AI Film Festival (Kazakhstan)

The Astana AI Film Festival (AAIFF) ran October 1–3, 2026. Its own site lists 8,067 submitted films from 125 countries and regions and a $2 million fund: $1 million in prizes and $1 million invested in new AI productions. The thematic competition (“The Future Worth Living In”) paid $450,000, $200,000 and $100,000, and five open-section awards paid $50,000 each. Both competitions required films of at least 3 minutes, and entrants had to disclose the models and pipeline they used.

Qazinform reports that Sitara (Abhik Banerjee) placed second and Looking for Perseida (Ernest Desumbila) third. The Best Story award went to The Last Span, whose team said it used Seedance 2.5 and another tool. The festival’s site hadn’t posted the winners yet when we checked. 2027 dates: TBA.

Runway AI Festival (New York and Los Angeles)

Runway’s fourth annual AI Festival took entries from January 28 to April 27, 2026. Films had to run 3–15 minutes, include generative video and tell “a fully contained, linear narrative.” The Grand Prix was $50,000 plus 1,000,000 Runway credits. A Face Only a Mother Could Love (Robert Gaudette, 7:50) heads the 2026 film winners on Runway’s page, and Business Insider reported it took the festival’s top placement. There’s no 2027 call yet.

Reply AI Film Festival (Venice)

The Reply AI Film Festival closed entries on June 2, 2026 and premiered its finalists in Venice in September, with a reward pool of more than €30,000. To Dear Me (Gisele Tong) won, ahead of One Way (Egor Kharlamov) and Jinx (Mansha Totla). Entrants had to submit a document explaining how they used AI.

AI for Good Film Festival (Geneva)

The ITU’s AI for Good Film Festival received more than 1,300 submissions in 2026. Plastic Erosion (Yifei Li and Zheng Bao) won, UTILITY (Yuichi Ono) was second and The Homo Sapiens Family (Vic Wanchana Intrasombat) third, at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva. Its 2027 call is already posted: submissions open January 15 and close May 1, 2027 (23:59 CEST), for films of 1 to 10 minutes completed between September 1, 2026 and May 1, 2027, with one entry per team.

Higgsfield’s festival vote on October 8, explained

The Higgsfield Global Film Festival is a $1,000,000 contest for films of at least 3 minutes made on Higgsfield’s platform. Entries closed on September 16, 2026. In its October 5 changelog, Higgsfield moved the rest of the timeline back:

  • October 8: the shortlist is published and Audience Choice voting opens.
  • October 9–14: an independent jury reviews the same shortlist.
  • Last week of October: winners are announced (the exact date is still to be confirmed).

Per the festival’s official rules, Higgsfield’s creative team picks the shortlist. Votes don’t decide who gets on it. The community vote decides one prize only: the $100,000 Audience Choice Award goes to the shortlisted film with the most valid votes. Only Higgsfield users with an active paid subscription can vote, and Higgsfield says it will announce voting mechanics and the closing time when the shortlist goes live. The jury picks 1st ($500,000), 2nd ($200,000), 3rd ($100,000) and ten $10,000 honorable mentions. Each participant or team can win only one prize in total, across all their entries.

If you’re not a Higgsfield entrant, there’s nothing to submit on October 8. It’s a date to watch, and a preview of what juries reward.

Platform contests vs. independent AI film festivals

There are two kinds of AI film festival, and the difference decides which tools you can use.

Platform contests Independent festivals
Examples Higgsfield Global Film Festival; CapCut awards inside WAIFF Astana, Artefact, Florence, HKAIIFF, AI FilmFest, WAIFF’s main competitions
Tool rules Higgsfield: all AI video and image generation inside a Higgsfield project, all audio AI-generated. WAIFF’s CapCut awards: mainly CapCut tools Any tools, as long as generative AI is central to the film and you disclose how you used it
What’s judged The film, plus platform requirements (Higgsfield also requires its watermark and a public social post) The film
Trade-off Big prizes (Higgsfield: $1,000,000), but a film made elsewhere isn’t eligible Smaller or no cash at some, but one film can go to many festivals

If you want to enter several festivals with one film, a tool-agnostic workflow keeps more doors open. You can pick the best model for each shot and still qualify for every independent festival on the list.

What AI film festival rules usually require

Runtime: the 5-minute sweet spot

Festival Minimum Maximum
Runway AIF 2026 3 min 15 min
Higgsfield 2026 3:00 None (5:00 recommended)
Astana 2026 3 min None stated
WAIFF 2027 (short film) 5 min 15 min
Artefact 2026 None stated 314 s (5:14)
Florence 2026 None 20 min incl. credits
HKAIIFF 2027 No universal minimum Not stated
AI for Good 2027 1 min 10 min

A film between 5:00 and 5:14 meets every runtime rule in this table. If you’re making one short for the 2026–27 season, that’s the length to plan for. Cut longer versions later for festivals that allow them.

Disclosure of AI use

Expect to explain your process. Florence requires a 100–300-word AI statement. WAIFF asks for a production journal naming your main AI tools, where you used them and what humans decided. Astana required models and pipeline on submission. AI Film Festival Japan asks “which generative AI tools were used, in which processes, and to what extent,” and can request prompt histories. Keep notes as you work, not after.

Rights, likeness and audio

Every festival here puts rights clearance on you: music, footage, voices and faces. Higgsfield banned all real-person likenesses and voices, even with consent, and required every sound in the film to be AI-generated. AI Film Festival Japan bans copyright infringement and unauthorized deepfakes. A tool’s commercial-use license isn’t the same as rights to a likeness or a song.

Other rules that trip people up

  • Subtitles: Astana required English subtitles burned into the video. Florence and AI Film Festival Japan require English subtitles for most non-English films.
  • Completion date: HKAIIFF only accepts works completed on or after August 1, 2026. Florence accepts work completed after January 1, 2025.
  • One entry: Artefact allows one application per candidate.
  • Fees that rise: WAIFF’s fee goes from €15 to €30 after November 15 and to €60 in February.

What winning AI short films have in common

The festivals don’t publish scoring sheets, but their rules and their winners’ own words point in the same direction.

  • The script got the most time. The Astana Best Story team told Qazinform it spent about a month and a half refining the screenplay. At Runway’s festival, Business Insider’s reporter wrote that many films were visually “indistinguishable from human-made media” but “boring,” and quoted Ron Howard: “Story is always king.”
  • It was personal. Grand Prix winner Nikolay Shestak told Qazinform: “When I make films, I put something personal into them.”
  • Constraints didn’t stop them. Ernest Desumbila made his third-place Astana film, Looking for Perseida, in 10 days.
  • Performance took retakes. AI for Good says second-place filmmaker Yuichi Ono went through “countless generations in Seedance 2.0” to get the subtle expressions he wanted on a boy’s face.
  • Juries score story and craft together. Higgsfield’s four criteria are directing and storytelling, visual craft, sound and editing, and originality and concept. WAIFF scores overall quality, AI integrated with human direction, storytelling and technical quality.

Making a festival-ready AI short film: the workflow

This is the festival version of the workflow. For the full step-by-step, see our guide on how to make an AI movie. If this is your first film, start with the beginner’s guide to making your first AI film.

  1. Pick the festival, then the runtime. Read the rules before you write: length, tool rules, audio rules, disclosure, completion date and fee.
  2. Write to that length. In CinemaDrop’s AI script writer, the outline step lets you pick a target duration from 1 to 10 minutes (5 minutes is one of the presets). Spend your time here; it’s what the winners did.
  3. Lock your cast and sets as Elements. Create Character, Environment, Object and Prompt Elements (up to four reference images each) and @-tag them in every shot prompt. That’s how you keep the same face and the same room for the whole film. Our guide to consistent AI characters goes deeper.
  4. Storyboard every scene before you render video. Break the script into scenes and shots in the storyboard builder and fix frames as images first. Changing a frame is far cheaper than re-rendering a clip.
  5. Generate shots with the right model. Animate approved frames with image-to-video (start frame) or text-to-video. Seedance 2.5 makes clips of up to 30 seconds on the Plus plan. Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 are available from Basic.
  6. Build the sound. Add ElevenLabs voices and sound effects per shot, and music on Plus. Check the festival’s audio rule: some ban licensed music, others require cleared rights.
  7. Export and finish in your editor. Export the storyboard assets as a ZIP (Basic plan and up), then cut, grade, mix and subtitle in CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve. Deliver the format the festival asks for (usually MP4 or MOV) and burn in subtitles where required.
  8. Write the AI statement from your notes. List the tools, the stages you used them in and what you decided yourself. Artefact, for example, wants gen AI in pre-production, production and post. Script, storyboard frames, video and generated sound cover all three.

Submission checklist before you pay an entry fee

  • Runtime fits the festival (including or excluding credits, as the rules say)
  • Completion date is inside the eligibility window
  • AI statement or production journal written (tools, stages, human decisions)
  • Rights log for music, voices, footage and any likeness, with no real people unless you have clearance and the festival allows it
  • English subtitles, burned in if required
  • Final file in the requested format and resolution, plus poster or stills if asked
  • Full credits for every contributor
  • Entry fee paid before the price tier changes
  • Screener link public or password included, and left unchanged until notification

FAQ

Can I submit an AI film to a regular film festival?

Sometimes. It depends on each festival’s AI policy, so read the rules. Traditional festivals do program AI-made work: Dreams of Violets, a 75-minute docudrama that Variety reports was made with Kling, was part of the 2026 Tribeca Festival. AI film festivals are the safer first target because their rules are written for you.

How long should an AI short film be?

For festivals, 3–15 minutes is the common range, but limits vary: Artefact caps films at 314 seconds, WAIFF’s short film competition starts at 5 minutes and AI for Good allows 1 to 10 minutes. Check the runtime table above before you write.

Do I need to disclose that my film is AI-generated?

At AI film festivals, almost always. Florence, WAIFF, Astana, HKAIIFF, Reply and AI Film Festival Japan all ask how you used AI, and some can request prompt histories or production logs.

Which AI video models do festival winners use?

Most winners don’t say. Astana’s Best Story team named Seedance 2.5, and AI for Good’s second-place film used Seedance 2.0. Juries score the film, not the model.

Is it legal to use AI in movies?

Yes. Using AI tools to make a film is legal, but you’re responsible for the rights to everything in it, including music, voices, footage and faces. Festivals here disqualify infringing work and unauthorized deepfakes. On CinemaDrop, commercial use (Basic plan and up) doesn’t clear third-party IP or likeness for you.

What is the biggest AI film festival?

By entries, the largest we could verify is the Astana AI Film Festival: 8,067 films in its first year. By cash, Higgsfield’s $1,000,000 prize pool and Astana’s $1,000,000 in prizes (plus a $1,000,000 production fund) lead. Higgsfield’s contest is only open to films made on Higgsfield.

Plan your festival film this week

The nearest deadlines in this guide are Florence (Nov 4), AI FilmFest Málaga (Dec 1) and Artefact (Dec 2). A short film with a strong script and a consistent cast is realistic in that time.

Start your festival film in CinemaDrop: write the script, build your cast as Elements and storyboard every scene on the free Lite plan (50 free credits to start). Video generation starts on Basic ($8/month), and Seedance 2.5 is on Plus (see plans).

Festival dates, deadlines, fees, prizes and rules were checked on each festival’s official site on October 6, 2026, except where another source is named. They change often; confirm on the festival’s site before you enter. CinemaDrop publishes this guide and isn’t affiliated with any festival listed.
